My child is reaching the age limit for coverage

Sun Life Medical and Dental coverage for your dependent ends on the last day of the month of his/her birthday in the year he/she reaches age 22—or 25 if he/she is a full-time student.

If your child is turning 22 this month and in full-time education, he/she will be allowed to stay on your insurance plan. You'll receive an email from Darwin the month before your child's birthday to verify his/her status. If you do not receive this notification, contact Darwin by phone at 1-587-487-5731, or by email at intuitbenefitsadmin@darwin.com to confirm your child’s full-time education status. Include in your email:

  • Your employee ID
  • Your child’s full name
  • The name and country of your child's educational institution

If your child is enrolled in full-time education outside of Canada, your benefits administrator will need to complete additional paperwork to ensure he or she is covered in his or her country of study. This coverage is not guaranteed and needs to be approved by Sun Life's underwriting team. To request continued coverage for your dependent attending school in another country, open an HR Connect ticket with the following information:

  • Your child's full name and date of birth
  • Date your child is leaving and returning to Canada
  • End of school-term date
  • Name of educational institution
  • City/town/country of educational institution

If you take no action or your child is not in full-time education, he/she will be removed from coverage effective on the last day of the month of his/her 22nd birthday.
